Summary General text description of the levee system with a summary of why the levee is there, and the benefits it provides.
The Sainte Genevieve No.2 Levee System reduces the risk of flooding from the Mississippi River to the Sainte Genevieve County, MO. The system was privately constructed and locally operated and maintained by the nonfederal Sponsor, Sainte Genevieve County Levee District No. 2. Levee system construction began in 1978, and the levee consists of over 11 miles of earthen embankment along the Mississippi River. The nearly 7,700-acre leveed area is primarily agricultural bottomland. The system reduces flood risk to a few residences, productive agricultural land, and four miles of rail line.
Performance & Condition General text description of the historical and anticipated performance of the levee, the people and property benefitting from the levee and who may be at risk of flooding, and actions to address areas of concern.
PLEASE NOTE: The following Risk Characterization is a description of risk associated with this levee system. It is currently undergoing review and may be updated in the future. During the Flood of 1993 and again in early 2016, failure from overtopping resulted in extensive damage and flooding of the leveed area. Seepage has been reported, in more recent flood events, and seepage remains a risk to the levee system in future flood events. Though the Sainte Genevieve No. 2 Levee System has prevented Ste. Genevieve County agriculture from flooding during numerous flood events, there is a possibility that in any given year floodwaters could overtop or breach the levee system again. A levee failure could result in flooding of depths of up to 14 feet, loss of property and productive agricultural land, and potential loss of life, if residents and employees are not evacuated
