Summary General text description of the levee system with a summary of why the levee is there, and the benefits it provides.
The Santa Fe Levee System reduces the risk of flooding from the Kaskaskia River to productive agricultural bottomland in Clinton County, IL, near Bartelso. The system is privately constructed and operated and maintained by the nonfederal Sponsor: Santa Fe Drainage and Levee District. The levee system consists of 6.4 miles of earthen embankment along the Kaskaskia River. Within the over 2,900 acre leveed area are agriculture, 4 active oil/gas well, and three farmsteads. This system provides benefit to a population of nearly 20 and nearly $2 million in property.
Performance & Condition General text description of the historical and anticipated performance of the levee, the people and property benefitting from the levee and who may be at risk of flooding, and actions to address areas of concern.
The Santa Fe Levee System has prevented portions of Clinton County from Kaskaskia River flooding during past flood events. The system is in good condition and since construction of Carlyle Lake in 1967, flooding along the Kaskaskia River, and along this levee, has been significantly reduced. However, there is a risk that in any given year floodwaters could overtop or breach the levee system. A levee failure could result in flooding of depths of up to 9 feet, economic damage, and potential loss of life if the population is not evacuated.
