Summary General text description of the levee system with a summary of why the levee is there, and the benefits it provides.
The Lakeside 370 Levee System reduces the risk of flooding from the Mississippi River to the Premier 370 Business Park within the City of St. Peters in St. Charles County, Missouri. The system was locally constructed and is operated and maintained by the nonfederal sponsor, Lakeside 370 Levee District. The levee system was completed in 2006 and consists of 4.1 miles of earthen embankment constructed to attract commercial development to the St. Peters area. To date, the 1,400-acre leveed area is comprised of commercial and industrial properties and a major highway, Missouri Route 370. The leveed area is zoned and graded for commercial and industrial development and significant economic development has occurred since 2016 including large warehouse space for companies such as Amazon, Best Buy, and FedEx. The system provides benefits to approximately $300 million in commercial property and more than 1000 employees and patrons. New economic development is expected to continue to expand into the entire Business Park. The Lakeside 370 Levee System has prevented the leveed area from flooding during several major flood events. The levee system is one of the newest in the region, is well maintained, and has performed well in recent flood events.
Performance & Condition General text description of the historical and anticipated performance of the levee, the people and property benefitting from the levee and who may be at risk of flooding, and actions to address areas of concern.
A risk assessment performed in 2021 estimates there is a low likelihood the levee would be overtopped by a flood event. Due to regional geology and evidence of underseepage observed during the 2019 flood event, underseepage is the primary concern with the levee before overtopping. Despite observed underseepage, there are plans in place to address underseepage issues, coordinate flood warnings, and evacuation plans in the event of an emergency. In the event of failure, flooding could result to depths up to 21 feet, environmental consequences, economic damage, and loss of life if the population is not evacuated.
