Summary General text description of the levee system with a summary of why the levee is there, and the benefits it provides.
The Nutwood Levee System reduces the risk of flooding from the Illinois River to portions of Greene and Jersey counties in Illinois, including the villages of East Hardin and Nutwood. Located across the Illinois River from Hardin, the system is federally authorized and constructed and locally operated and maintained by the nonfederal Sponsor, Nutwood Drainage and Levee District. The levee system was improved in the 1930s and consists of 12.4 miles of earthen embankment along the Illinois River, McCoupin Creek, and Otter Creek. Within the over 9,900-acre leveed area are agricultural bottomland, several communities, a fire station, two oil/gas pipelines, and access to the Joe Page Bridge. The Joe Page Bridge provides critical access across the Illinois River for emergency vehicles and commuters. This system provides benefits to approximately 80 residents and over $8.5 million in property. In 2016, the levee system prevented an estimated $6 million in damages.
Performance & Condition General text description of the historical and anticipated performance of the levee, the people and property benefitting from the levee and who may be at risk of flooding, and actions to address areas of concern.
USACE completed a risk assessment of the Nutwood levee in 2014, and the risk assessment identified overtopping as the primary concern along the levee system. During the 1973, 1993, and 2019 flood events, the levee did overtop and breach causing widespread inundation of the leveed area. A future levee overtopping or breach could result in flooding of depths of over 25 feet, loss of life, and significant economic damage.
