Summary General text description of the levee system with a summary of why the levee is there, and the benefits it provides.
This levee system consists of a single segment, beginning at high ground on the southwest side of Des Arc in Prairie County, Arkansas. The levee around the southern and eastern sides of the town before tying into high ground at the Corner of Curran St. and Marion St. on the eastern side of Des Arc. The construction of the levee was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1928 and completed in March, 1954. The primary purpose of the levee is to protect the town of Des Arc from flood waters on the White River. The system consists of approximately 1.5 miles of earthen embankment levee and a single stormwater pumping station, which includes pair of 60-inch CMP culverts to allow gravity drainage when the White River is a normal stages.

The levee system has been successful at preventing flooding in the past with. The potential exists for flood events higher than the levee has experienced to occur that could lead to overtopping or breach of the levee. If that occurred, the developed area behind the levee would experience damages and potential loss of life. However, individual residents and local businesses have roles and responsibilities in reducing their own risk
